Definition of Chemical Change

A process that occurs when a substance gets combined with other substances and leads to the formation of new compounds is termed as a chemical change. Chemical changes include the formation as well as the decomposition of the substances. Generally, these chemical changes are not reversible.

They involve the release and the absorption of heat energy. Those changes which produce heat are known as exothermic changes and those which require heat are termed as endothermic changes. The atoms of the molecule which are participating in the chemical change usually undergo rearrangement and this forms new products.
