Definition of Allele

Alleles are one of the two genes that are located alternatively on the chromosome. They are also known as allelomorph. The specific region on the chromosome where the allele occurs is known as the locus of the chromosome. These alleles are mostly present in the form of pairs. But it is a possibility that there are some traits that are influenced by multiple alleles.

The genotype of an organism is actually a combination of these alleles. There are three types of alleles i.e., dominant, recessive and codominant. If the allele pair is same, the genotype of the individual is termed as homozygous for that trait and is known as heterozygous if the pair is different.

Example of Allele:

There are three alleles which control the expression of ABO blood group system. they are IA, IB and i.
