Definition of Alpha Particle

Alpha particle is an entity which is composed of two units of neutrons and protons. After being bound with each other, these particles form a structure which is quite similar to that of a helium atom. These alpha particles are produced when a certain process regarding alpha radioactive decay is going on. These are represented as α or He2+.

When this cation of helium gains 2 electrons from its surrounding, it again becomes an electrically neutral atom of helium. The ionizing ability of the alpha particles is very high and they generally have a low penetration power.
