Definition of Attenuation

As the phenomena of transcription and translation proceed simultaneously in the case of bacterial cells therefore, attenuation is such control and regulatory mechanism that leads to the premature termination of the process of transcription.

An attenuator is being involved in this process and it offers itself as a stop signal. It is present in that portion of DNA which is consistent with the mRNA’s leader sequence. On the basis of metabolic conditions, the attenuator is capable of either stopping the transcription or to read the part of the mRNA and to synthesize the specific protein.
