Definition of Cathode

The electrodes are the conductors of electricity and they serve the role of carrying the current into the non-metallic liquids, solids, and gases. There are two types of electrodes that participate in the conductivity i.e., cathode and anode.

The major function of a cathode is to provide the cations with electrons. These electrons come from the conducting solution which is termed as an electrolyte. Therefore, it is said that the reduction takes place at the cathode. The cathode of an electrolytic cell is negative whereas that of a galvanic cell is positive.
