Definition of Cellulose

Cellulose is an organic compound and a carbohydrate in nature. It is a macromolecule that is composed of hundreds or thousands of chains of beta glucose subunits that are linked together with the help of glycosidic bonds. It is known to be a primary component that makes up the structure of the cell wall in the plants.

Due to its high tensile strength, the plants remain stiff and in an upright position. The cellulose is broken down into its constituent by the action of an enzyme named cellulase. Human beings are unable to digest it due to the unavailability of the cellulase. Paper and cotton are also made up of cellulose.
