Definition of Charles's Law

Charles’s law is one of the laws regarding gases and it gives us the relationship between the fixed amount of gas and the absolute temperature. It is stated as the volume that is occupied by a certain amount of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature of the system. When the temperature of the system is increased, the gas tends to expand due to the random and increased motion of the molecules, hence the volume increases.

On the contrary, when the temperature is decreased, the motion of the molecules ceases and the gas compresses leading to the decreased volume. The pressure and the total number of moles of the gas are kept constant during the process.

V α T

VT = k (when P and n are constant)
