Definition of Condensation Polymerization

Condensation polymerization is a phenomenon in which the small molecules known as monomers and oligomers react with one another in order to give rise to larger structural units called polymers. When these molecules link with each other, they tend to release small molecules like water and methanol.

The condensation polymers may be linear or branched. The density of the branching totally depends upon the functionality of the moieties involved and their concentration present in the mixture.

Example of Condensation Polymerization:

The formation of esters from the combination of carboxylic acids and alcohols with the release of the water molecules is an example of condensation polymerization. The polyesters have quite distinct consumer and industrial applications.
