Definition of Cost Object

Cost objects are defined as the objects that incur costs in an organization. In the case of a business operation, an operational department is a cost object. The cost objects are meant to measure the cost of an object related to it. For example, if a manager wants to assess the total cost of designing a new product, what costs would be involved in it. In this case we can call that the cost object is product design.

For most businesses, the cost object is the output i.e. the end product or service. The managers want to assess what a product cost and whether it is profitable or not.
