Definition of Distillation

Distillation is a physical technique that is employed when there is a need to convert the liquid state of any substance into vapors. These vapors can subsequently be converted back into their original form, that is the liquid. This is most commonly used when there is a mixture of any liquid and non-volatile solid substance.

Distillation can provide us with such a component that is nearly pure or it can increase the concentration of any component that is present in the mixture.

Examples of Distillation:

The separation of alcohol from the fermented material, that of gasoline, kerosene from the crude oil, and the separation of the two or more liquids with different B.P are examples of distillation.
