Definition of Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry is a branch of physical chemistry and it deals with the study of the relationship between the electric current and the observable chemical changes. There may be a production of electric current due to any chemical change or a chemical change may take place due to the electricity.

In these chemical reactions, there is a movement of charges between the electrodes and the electrolyte. The positive electrode is known as the anode and the negative electrode is the cathode. In short, it can be said that electrochemistry explains all those oxidation-reduction reactions which are brought about by an external electric circuit.
