Definition of Epiphyte

An epiphyte is a plant that depends on another plant either for its growth or for physical support only. It is also known as an air plant. Epiphytes are not attached to the ground so they are unable to absorb nutrients from the ground. A large number of epiphytes are present in the tropical areas where they are able to get an excessive amount of sunlight by being present above ground level.

The leaves of the supporting plants and other organic debris are the source of nutrients for them. Moreover, they absorb moisture from the environment. Most of the epiphytes are flowering plants.
