Definition of Fatty Acids

Fatty acids are such carboxylic acids that are composed of a long aliphatic chain and they are known to be an important biological component. The aliphatic chain present in the fatty acids may be saturated (contain all single bonds) or unsaturated (contain double or triple bonds).

Those fatty acids which are naturally occurring have an unbranched aliphatic chain and the number of carbon atoms ranges from four to twenty-eight (only even). The fatty acids are present in the biological systems in the form of phospholipids, triacylglycerides, and cholesteryl esters. These components serve the role of storing energy as well as maintaining the structures.
