Definition of Fission

The phenomenon in which a heavy nucleus tends to split up into two or more than two nuclei is termed a fission reaction. A fission reaction is a type of radioactive decay and is a nuclear reaction. This type of reaction produces a huge amount of energy and emits γ- photons. Those nuclides which are quite heavy, release a huge amount of energy in the forms of electromagnetic radiations and kinetic energy.

It is a condition for the fission reactions to having a greater total binding energy of the resulting entities as compared to that of the starting elements. Most of the fission reactions tend to give rise to two charged fragments.
