Definition of Halogens

The elements belonging to the seventh group of the periodic table are termed the halogens. The five chemical elements present in this group are named fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At). According to the modern IUPAC rulings, the halogens are given group 17.

The literal meaning of the word halogen is salt-producing. Whenever there is a reaction between a halogen and a metal, salt is produced. The halogens require one electron in order to complete their outer octet and to acquire a noble gas configuration. Fluorine is the most reactive halogen whereas iodine gives slow reactions. The halogens are commonly used as disinfectants.
