Definition of Legitimate Power

Legitimate power is a power that a person has in an organization who holds a certain position. The higher his position is the more he has legitimate power. Usually, the top hierarchy has this power over its subordinates.  A person exercises his legitimate power to make sure about the compliance of certain policies and decisions.

Legitimate power could be about holding someone accountable for their actions, providing recognition for someone’s performance, firing someone who is not complying with the policy or is found in an act that contradicts with company’s value and culture.
