Definition of Lipids

Lipids belong to the group of organic compounds and they are known to be an important biological molecule. The lipids are insoluble in water and they are responsible for providing insulation. Moreover, they also help in storing energy, about 9 kcal energy is stored in 1g of lipid.

The membranes present in the cells of the living systems are composed of lipid molecules i.e., phospholipids as they do not allow water to interact with the membranes. The lipids are also present in the form of hormones which act as chemical messengers and help the systems in their normal functioning.
