Definition of Mass Number

When the total number of protons and neutrons present in an atomic nucleus is added, they give the mass number of that atom. It is also known as the atomic mass number as well as the nucleon number.  The mass number is denoted with the letter A. The difference between the mass number and the atomic number gives us the total number of neutrons present in an atom (neutrons = A – Z).

It is usually written to the left of the symbol of the element in the form of a superscript. The isotopes are such forms of the same element which have different mass numbers. The mass numbers vary due to the presence of a different number of neutrons in them.
