Definition of Neutralization Reaction

A chemical reaction that takes place between an acid and a base is termed a neutralization reaction. The acid and the base react with each other quantitatively in order to produce salt and water. The acid tends to donate its H+ ion and the base releases its hydroxyl group. When these H+ and OH- react, they form a water molecule.

The neutralization reaction is typically an acid-base neutralization reaction.

Acid + Base(alkali) → Salt + Water

Example of Neutralization Reaction:

When hydrochloric acid (an acid) and sodium hydroxide (a base) react with each other, sodium chloride is formed along with the release of water molecules.
