Definition of Nonmetals

Non-metals are those elements that have characteristics like low melting and boiling point as well as low density. These elements generally do not have a tendency to conduct heat and electricity. They can easily be broken down when are in a solid-state. The values of ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity of the non-metals are relatively high.

Out of the 118 elements mentioned in the periodic table, 17 are regarded as non-metals. They are in the form of solid, liquid, and gas. Two classes of these non-metals are formed i.e., reactive non-metals and noble gases.

Examples of Non-Metals:

Hydrogen, helium, oxygen, halogens, argon, krypton all are non-metals. Some of them tend to covalent bonding whereas the noble gases are inert in nature.
