Definition of Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is one of the branches of chemistry which deals with the study of organic compounds. The organic compounds are those compounds that are composed of carbon atoms along with hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, and halogens (F, Cl, etc.). The structure, chemical, and physical properties, and the reactions of the organic compounds are studied under this branch.

The synthesis of natural products, drugs, polymers, etc. is also studied in organic chemistry. The organic compounds are very diverse due to the peculiar features exhibited by carbon. The carbon has an ability to form long-chain i.e., catenation. This leads to producing a variety of compounds. Moreover, all the biological molecules like carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins are also organic in nature.
