Definition of Percent Yield

Whenever a chemical reaction takes place, it never goes the way as planned on paper. The concentration of the products would always be less than the calculated value. This might happen due to the formation of undesired products, by the inexperience and negligence of the worker or the reaction would go incomplete.

The percent yield, therefore, tells the chemist about the success of the reactions and it is a ratio between the actual and the theoretical yield and is expressed in the form of a percentage. The theoretical yield is calculated from the given quantity of reactants and it is the maximum amount of the products whereas the actual yield is obtained by determining the amount of product formed at the end of the reaction.
