Definition of Phenol

Phenol is an organic compound and it belongs to that class of compounds that are aromatic in nature. It is a derivative of benzene and has a molecular formula is C6H5OH. When one hydrogen atom of the benzene ring is being replaced with the hydroxyl group, phenol is formed. It is volatile in nature i.e., vaporizes at room temperature, and is in the form of crystalline solid.

Phenol is slightly acidic and therefore, requires proper handling as can lead to burns. It is significantly soluble in water and it was first extracted from coal tar. Phenol is widely used nowadays as a starting material in the manufacturing of various chemical compounds.
