Definition of Potential Energy

Potential energy is one of the forms of energies and it exists in an object due to its position. It may also be due to other factors like stresses within the object and the electric charge of an object. The potential energy is further classified into gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy, and electric potential energy.

The gravitation PE depends upon the mass of an object and its distance from the center of the other object. The formula of gravitational PE is mgh. According to System International, the unit of energy is the joule and its symbol is J.
