A kind of reaction that results in the formation of an insoluble compound due to the mixing of two different solutions, is termed a precipitation reaction. The solutions which are mixed together contain different salts. When the ions of these salts react with each other, they tend to form an insoluble salt which precipitates out of the solution.
Example of Precipitation Reaction:
One of the examples of such a kind of reaction is between the aqueous solution of silver nitrate and potassium chloride. The ionization of the compounds occurs and it leads to the formation of silver chloride and potassium nitrate. The silver nitrate is an insoluble salt and hence it precipitates out of the solution.
