Definition of Primary Structure

The proteins are formed when the polypeptide chain is composed of more than fifty amino acids. The proteins exhibit different structures depending upon their folding and interactions. One of the structures of proteins is termed as the primary structure. It is basically referred to as the sequence of the amino acids that make up the molecule of protein.

It is the simplest structure and is significant for the 3D structure of the proteins as well as for the mechanism of action of proteins. The sequence of the nucleotides in the gene determines the sequence of the amino acids in the protein as it is the gene that encodes the protein.
