Definition of Prophase

Mitosis is a process that is responsible for separating the duplicated genetic material of the parent cell into two daughter cells. Prophase is the first stage of mitosis and during this phase, the chromatin material condenses and the nuclear envelope starts to get disappear. After the condensation, it coils and attains a highly compact form. This results in the formation of chromosomes that are visible.

The chromosomes are made up of highly organized DNA and when they get replicated, they acquire an X shape. They are then known as sister chromatids. They are joined with each other at the centromere. After this, the mitotic apparatus starts its formation. This mitotic apparatus i.e. spindle fibers serve the role of separating the sister chromatids.
