Definition of Public Goods

Public goods are goods that are easily available to the whole public for usage. Unlike private goods, which are only available and accessed by individuals, public goods are accessed by everyone as they are paid for collectively through taxes. For example, police, defense, or the law.

Public goods have two characteristics. Nonexcludable and nonrivalrous. First means that no one can be excluded from using public goods. For example, if Jenny is eating Pizza, she can exclude Maria from eating pizza with her but if she disagrees with America’s defense policy, the national defense will not exclude her from protection.

Similarly, nonrivalrous means public goods can be accessed and used by anyone anytime without competing with each other. Public Goods, just like pizza in the above example, if Maria also starts eating the Pizza with Jenny, she will become her competitor but they both can consume national defense that will not reduce the amount left for others.
