Definition of Radioactive Decay

A kind of process in which there is an unstable atomic nucleus that tends to lose energy by emitting radiation is termed radioactive decay. It is also named radioactivity, nuclear decay, radioactive disintegration, and nuclear disintegration. Radioactive material is that material that contains unstable nuclei in it and hence has a tendency to radiate.

The most common kinds of radioactive decays are α, β, and γ decay. Radioactive decay is a random phenomenon at the single atoms’ level. The unstable nuclei which are going to decay are called the parent radionuclide. The radioactive decay leads to the production of at least one daughter nuclide.
