Definition of Raw Material

Raw material is any material that is in unprocessed shape and some work has to be performed on it to convert it into finished form. Businesses purchase raw materials from suppliers and then convert it into different finished products.

For example, carpenters purchase raw wood from the timber market and then make different wooden furniture out of it. The furniture is now salable to customers. Similarly, a baker purchases raw flour from the flour mill and then bakes different bakery products from it. The raw material for a leather factory will be animal skins. Raw material for the cement factory will be gypsum and other stones.
