Definition of Recombinant

The term recombinant may be referred to a cell or an organism that is composed of a new combination of traits or alleles. This new combination is formed either by the phenomenon of crossing over or due to independent assortment of the chromosomes. The recombinant organisms are also formed by the technique of genetic engineering in which the genes are transferred within the species and even across species and kingdoms. This leads to the generation of transgenic organisms.

The recombinant DNA is described as that molecule of DNA which is formed when two or more than two fragments derived from different sources are combined together. This recombinant DNA technology utilizes the palindromic sequences and produces sticky ends. The introduction of the DNA segment into the vector is an example of such a technique.
