Definition of Redox Reactions

Redox reactions are one of the types of chemical reactions in which there occurs subsequent oxidations and reductions. In this way, the oxidation states of the participating atoms constantly change. The oxidation is defined as the loss of hydrogen or electron, the addition of oxygen, and an increase in the oxidation number.

The reduction in the reverse of it means there is a gain of hydrogen or electron, removal of oxygen, and a decrease in the oxidation number. There is a formal transfer of the electrons from one chemical species to the other in the oxidation-reduction reactions. One of the species that loses electrons (being oxidized) is the reducing agent whereas that which accepts the electrons (being reduced) is the oxidizing agent.
