Definition of Resonance Structures

Resonance is a method that describes the bonding exhibited by certain molecules and ions. The bonding in these molecules exists due to the combination of some contributing forms which are termed as the resonance structures. These resonance structures tend to form a resonance hybrid which is the actual molecule formed by the contributing structures and it is the most stable structure too.

These contributing structures are different from one another only due to the formal apportionment of electrons to the atoms. Furthermore, the delocalization of the electrons reduces the potential energy of the system.
