Definition of Skunkworks



Skunkworks is a group a small team comprising of not less than 6-25 people, work outside the organization to create a new product in less time. These teams undertake secret projects either initiated by the organization itself or by the government. These teams are autonomous in their work and take quick decisions due to losing team structure. These teams may be physically separated from the other teams who are working on the same product to minimize disruptive interference.

 


Big giants like Google and Apple had skunkworks labs in the past where innovative products were built. Steve Jobs along with his group of 50 people developed his skunkworks lab behind Good Earth Restaurant in Cupertino, Calif to develop the first Macintosh computer.
