Definition of Specific Heat Capacity

The specific heat capacity is symbolized by cp and it is stated as the ratio of heat capacity of a sample of a substance to the mass of the sample. In simpler words, it is defined as the amount of heat that must be supplied to the substance so that its temperature rises by one degree Celsius.

According to SI units, the specific heat capacity is measured in terms of joule/kelvin kilogram. It has been calculated that the specific heat capacity of water is 4179.6 JK-1kg-1. The specific heat capacity is dependent upon temperature and it is variable for all three states of matter.
