Definition of Sporophyte

The sporophyte is developed from a zygote that is being formed by the fertilization of the haploid egg and sperm, hence it is a diploid multicellular stage that exists during the lifecycle of the species of plants and algae. The phase of multicellular diploid sporophyte is alternated with the phase of multicellular haploid gametophyte and therefore, the phenomenon is called as alternation of generations.

This sporophyte generation is far more prominent as compared to the gametophyte generation in the case of angiosperms and gymnosperms. The sporophyte is responsible for the production of spores by the phenomenon of meiosis. These spores are then developed into the gametophyte.
