Definition of Standard Solution

According to concepts of analytical chemistry, a standard solution is that which contains a known concentration of either an element or a substance. The solute is first weighed and then it is dissolved in a specific amount of solvent in order to form a solution. A standard substance, also known as the primary standard is used in the preparation of a standard solution. The primary standards are highly pure, stable and they do not contain any molecule of water. Moreover, their molecular weight is also very high.

The application of the standard solutions is that the concentration of the other substances is determined by it such as in titration. The concentration of the standard solutions is expressed in the terms of molarity and moles per liter.
