Definition of State Of Matter

The matter exists in four distinct states which are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. The existence of intermediate states i.e., liquid crystals is also brought into our knowledge. When extreme conditions of temperature, energy, density, etc. are given to the matter, the intermediates like neutron-degenerate matter, quark-gluon plasma come into existence.

The matter when in a state of solid, has a fixed volume as well as fixed shape. The molecules present in it are tightly packed and the motion between them is minimum. The liquid has an ability to maintain the fixed volume but the shape is varied according to the vessel in which it is placed. The molecules of a gas are free to move as they have variable shape and volume. Their motion is highly random and the molecules have a very high amount of energy in them.
