Definition of Waxes

Waxes are known to be components of the biological systems and they belong to the group of lipids that are neutral in nature. The structure of the waxes shows that it contains a long-chain fatty acid which is bonded with long-chain alcohol. The linking of alcohol with a fatty acid leads to the formation of an ester.

The waxes unable to solubilize in water and they are usually solids at normal room temperature. The leaves of the plants and the cuticle of various insects are covered with waxes and this helps them to repel water. Moreover, waxes also serve the purpose of storing energy in the case of microscopic plants and animals existing in the marine water.
