Definition of Acrocentric

The chromosomes are the fibre-like structures that are composed of proteins and DNA. They are located inside the nucleus in the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. The chromosomes exist in a variety of shapes, one of which is known as acrocentric. The acrocentric chromosome has its centromere slightly far from the center but not at the very end of the chromosome.

Humans have a total of 23 pairs of chromosomes, out of which five are acrocentric chromosomes. They are numbered as 13, 14, 15, 21 and 22. The one arm of these chromosomes is prominently poor in genes. The Down syndrome is the result of an extra acrocentric chromosome 21.
