Definition of Amino Terminus

The amino terminus is referred to that terminal of the protein molecule or a polypeptide chain which bears the free amino (-NH2) group. It is also known as the amine terminal, N-terminal end or N-terminus. In the structure of a peptide, the -NH2 group belonging to one amino acid is bonded to the carboxylic (-COOH) group of the other amino acid and in this way, one peptide bond is formed between the two amino acids.

Hence, the last amino acid of the protein is linked with its carboxyl group and bears a free amino group. The sequence of the peptides is written as N-terminus to C-terminus by convention.
