Definition of Chaperone

In the field of molecular biology, the chaperones are such proteins that facilitate the folding and unfolding as well as the assembly and disassembly of the macromolecular structures. These proteins are present when the macromolecules are executing their normal biological activities.

The chaperones are directly related to the process of folding of proteins as in the formation and assembling of nucleosomes. The chaperones also prevent the aggregation of the newly formed proteins into non-functional structures. These are also able to tolerate heat but not all the chaperone proteins possess this ability.
