Definition of Coding Strand

There are two strands of the DNA molecule. One of the strands is not used as a template in the process of DNA transcription, this is named as the coding strand. It is named due to the fact that it corresponds to exactly the same sequence as of the messenger RNA molecule. The mRNA is composed of the codon sequences that are mandatory for building the protein molecules.

The coding strand and the new strand of messenger RNA only differ in this way that the mRNA strand has a uracil base in it instead of thymine. The coding strand is also named as sense strand and it runs in 5’ to 3’ direction.
