Definition of Cyclic Amp

The full form of Cyclic AMP (cAMP) is 3’,5’-cyclic adenosine monophosphate and it serves its role in a number of biological processes as a secondary messenger. It is known as the derivative of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the energy currency of the cell.

The synthesis of cAMP from ATP is catalyzed by an enzyme, adenylate cyclase which is present on the inner side of the cell membrane. It is responsible for transducing the signals inside the cell in different organisms and also for the activation of various protein kinases.
