Definition of Depurination

Depurination is a type of chemical reaction of the purine deoxyribonucleosides as well as the ribonucleosides that leads to the release of the nitrogenous base. Purines are those heterocyclic aromatic compounds which are composed of two rings. The adenine and guanine are the purine bases.

The examples of purine deoxyribonucleosides are deoxyadenosine and deoxyguanosine whereas the ribonucleosides are adenosine and guanosine. The adenine and guanine are formed from these nucleosides by the hydrolytic cleavage of β-N-glycosidic bond. The other product that is removed in depurination is deoxyribose sugar in case of deoxyribonucleosides and ribose from the ribonucleosides. The reaction of depurination has a significant role in the initiation of cancer.
