Definition of Dna Ligase

DNA ligase is one of the enzymes that take part in catalyzing the process of DNA replication. The main function of this enzyme is to catalyze the formation of phosphodiester linkages that help in joining together the two strands of DNA.

DNA ligase is also responsible for repairing the breaks present in the single as well as in both the strands of the DNA duplex. When the DNA ligase repairs the breaks in the single strand of the DNA, it uses the complementary strand as a template to form the phosphodiester bonds. Moreover, it is widely used in molecular biology labs to form recombinant DNA.
