Definition of Electron

An atom is made up of subatomic particles like electrons, protons, and neutrons. The electrons are represented by the symbol e- and β- and it is a negatively charged particle. They are considered as elementary particles as it is not known yet whether they have any substructure or not.

The mass of an electron is equal to 1/1836 of that of the proton. The electrons have the ability to exhibit the property of both particles as well as waves. In an atom of an element, the number of electrons and the protons are equal and they are located in the orbitals of the atoms and participate in bonding.
