Definition of Embryonic Stem Cell

An embryonic stem cell is a type of stem cell which is pluripotent and is found in the inner mass of cells of a blastocyte. These cells have the ability to grow into three germ layers i.e. ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. It can also be said that they have the tendency to develop into almost 200 types of cells according to the adult body.

The embryonic stem cells are also able to undergo the process of replication indefinitely. On the other hand, the adult cells are multipotent and can generate only a limited number of types of cells. These cells are employed in the investigation of the early development of humans, in the study of genetic disorders etc.
