Definition of Glofish

GloFish is the first-ever genetically modified animal that has become available in the markets. Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is defined as an organism that has foreign genetic material incorporated into its own DNA. This process of incorporating a foreign DNA is done by the help of recombinant DNA technology.

GloFish is an aquarium fish which has the ability to glow as those genes that are responsible for encoding the fluorescent proteins are expressed in them. There is a variety of such fish available in the market currently. They are being used in research experiments as bio-indicators in order to detect the number of chemicals and pollution in the environment.
