Definition of Haplodiploid

Haplodiploid is a species in which the male is haploid (1n) whereas the female is diploid (2n) and n is the number of chromosomes. This phenomenon is seen in species like ants and bees. Through the system of sex determination, we are able to know the characteristics of an organism in terms of its sex.

In haplodiploid, the males are haploid as the eggs remain unfertilized by the female members and the eggs that have got fertilized develop into females. The sex of an organism can be determined by the help of both genetics (sex chromosomes) and environmental and social factors.
